Dear Columbine Parents and Families,
I came to work today and the sun was already out! Can you believe that we are already in March? Spring is a very busy time at Columbine. Bianca and I hope that, with your help and support, our students will have a very productive and fun spring.
Hold the Date- This year is Columbine’s 60th birthday and we will have our 40th Mile Marathon. If you can, please pencil in your calendars May 19 when Columbine students (current and past), staff, families and neighbors will come together to celebrate these important milestones. More information coming your way soon. Viva Columbine!
Looping Results– After parents forwarded concerns to our School Accountability Committee (SAC), SAC surveyed our learning community to find out how it felt about the effectiveness of the 4th and 5th grade loop. Traditionally, our fourth and fifth graders have the same teachers for two school years. Everyone had an opportunity to share their ideas, including former students and their families who are now sixth and seventh graders. After tallying the many surveys returned, it was clear that the majority of the respondents agreed that the loop should continue. SAC also wants you to know that in the next SAC meeting will be dedicated to thoroughly analyzing the feedback provided in order to forward recommendations to the instructional staff. Thank you for participating in this survey!
State Assessment– 3rd through 5th grade will have their state assessments in March and April (please click on the month to access Testing Calendar). Thank you for supporting our school during this time, and please, help us make sure to encourage students taking the test to do their best. We want our students to have a healthy relationship with these kinds of assessments, as they are a constant in the world that we live in. Our staff is very careful to teach test-taking skills as any other genre and not to pass a test. If you would like to opt out your student, please follow the following LINK. It is important that I share that only you can access this link for your student through the IC Parent Portal and that only students on this list can be excused from state testing. This is a Colorado Department of Education requirement to ensure that only students excused directly by parents do not take the test. Otherwise, participation is compulsory.
Our Apology– We are very sorry for having to reschedule the Kindergarten Musical and the Spanish Spelling Bee. Bianca told me that the Kindergarten Musical was epic! I was at the BVSD Board of Education meeting to advocate for increased Social-Emotional Support for Elementary Schools. I feel very passionate about this need.
Thank You– to all of you for supporting our families and students that are struggling for one reason or another. We are keeping Columbine a safe place for all students by teaching the students how to advocate for themselves and others. Our parents are counting on us to keep things at school as normal as possible. Nevertheless, please be assured that through our Families and Educators Together Team (FET) we are asking families what they need and referring them to resources available in our county. Please do not hesitate to let us know if you want to get involved.
