May 1, 2017
Dear Columbine Families and Friends,
May! What happened? The school year is almost over and we have so much learning to do. I hope that this email finds you well and ready for a fun and productive end of the school year!
As many of you already know, Dr. Bianca Gallegos will be your principal starting in the 2017-2018 school year. This news is bittersweet for me. On the one hand, I am certain that I am leaving Columbine in the hands of a skilled and caring colleague. Bianca is like a unicorn. Think about it, she went to Columbine, is bilingual and culturally proficient, has a wide range of leadership experiences, has a doctorate, and has earned the love and respect of our learning community. She also has had a year to train for this transition. With your support, Bianca will ensure that the Columbine Learning Community continues to thrive. I know from recent experience that these kind of unicorns are hard to catch… we have one. I am sad to leave but happy that this decision will provide stability and growth for years to come.
Tomorrow is teacher appreciation day. Please encourage the students to thank their teachers for their hard work and for everything that they do to care for them. In my opinion, while all of us bring value to our school, just as a doctor is the most important person in a hospital, the teachers are the most important person in a school. The more we support them and cheer them on, the better for our students.
In the following weeks, we will be creating the classes for the 2017-2018 school year. I am copying below our class placement policy:
Creating balanced classes each year is a collaborative process that the Columbine teachers and staff begin working on during a spring in‐service day and continue refining in August. Teachers and staff consider academic strengths and needs, gender, social‐emotional needs, and peer dynamics as they work to create balanced classes. If you would like to provide additional information on your child’s learning and/or social development needs, please do so in writing to the principal. Letters should not be sent directly to classroom teachers. Your written input will be shared only with those teachers and staff members who are involved in creating new class lists. Columbine does not consider requests for a specific teacher.
To give us your input, in accordance with the above policy, please click on the following link: CLASS INPUT. This the only way to provide feedback to the team. Thank you!
