Dear Columbine Parents,
Happy New Year! On behalf of myself and the Columbine staff thank you for all your kindnesses and wishes for a great 2016. We are very thankful to serve such a wonderful learning community.
Coming back there is a lot of good work to do. This week I am having a parent meeting with 5th grade parents to share with them our Columbine Pathways to Career pilot program. We are hoping to use data from this pilot program to secure funds to in the future have a similar after school program for our students in grades 3rd through 5th. Below is the letter that I send to 5th grade parents explaining the pilot. Please feel free to email if you have any questions or feel that you could contribute make the pilot a success. A big component is to tap the parent expertise within our school community.
Dear 5th Grade Families,
I am writing to let you know about an exciting opportunity for our fifth graders starting in February. Last year, the Fifth grade teachers and I started to dream about the possibility of designing an after school program for all the fifth graders based on the Colorado Career Cluster Model. Since the spring of last year we have met with many possible stakeholders, to name a few, Boulder Valley School District, Family Resource Schools, and I Have a Dream Foundation, to help us plan and secure funding for a pilot program called Columbine Pathways to Careers. In a nutshell, thanks to the Impact on Education Foundation of Boulder, we will offer seven classes aimed at giving our students experience in at least two of the career clusters. The students have already taken an interest inventory which will be used to assign them to two classes. Classes will be offered to all fifth graders on Tuesdays and Thursdays starting the first week in February through the first week in May. To give you an idea of what this may look like, we are creating a class in the Health Sciences and Public Safety cluster where students will get their Baby Sitting Certificate, while also getting CPR and First Aid certified. We are still in the development phases and looking for qualified instructors in a few of the cluster areas.
To make this project a success we need your help. We need you to attend one informational meeting planning meeting on January 6, 2016:

Please come help us make the Columbine Pathways to Career pilot a reality. We think that it will be a fun and enriching opportunity for our students!
One of the reasons why I love working at Columbine is that I have received feedback from you asking that we renew efforts to keep our community a welcoming place for everyone. Specifically, families have noticed a decrease in participation of community members where Spanish is the dominant home language in schoolwide activities. I have also been asked if there is a way for us to facility increased quality interactions between our diverse students. The answer of course is a resounding yes! Let’s partner together to teach and model for our students how to be inclusive and how to cherish our diversity.
To start with this important, work, I am having a meeting with families where Spanish is the dominant home language in the afternoon of January 13. We want to find out the needs of the community and then engage them in a plan to meet identified needs. I am also meeting with teachers to talk about what we can do within our school day to foster increased opportunities for cross-cultural interactions as well as deliberately teach cultural competency skills. During our next PTA, I will report to the greater community, seek your input, and add to the plan as needed. Families and friends, please take the time to talk to your children about your own family values with regards to this topic. Remember, while there are challenges associated with belonging to a diverse community, the opportunities and richness that this adds to the educational experience of our students is boundless. Here is where the training our global citizens begins, right?
